FMLA and Leave of Absence Requests

Do you need to take time away from work for your own health condition or to care for a family member? If so, read on!

To qualify for FMLA, you must meet the following criteria: Worked at least 1,250 hours in the past year, and been with CES for at least one (1) year. If you do not meet that criteria, there may be other ways to support your need for time away from work– reach out to hr@collaborative.org for more information.

As a reminder, time away from work can be taken on an intermittent basis or a continuous basis– it all depends on what your needs are. Intermittent time can be taken in small increments of as little as 15 minutes. Continuous time away from work is typically more than 5 business days, but no more than 12 weeks under FMLA.

To request time away from work, please fill out the Leave of Absence Request Form, and a member of the HR team will be in touch with you about next steps.

      Recruitment Plan:

CES has a comprehensive plan to meet the demand for educators and to diversify the CES workforces. This plan was informed by an extensive review by CES in 2019 of the body of research on teacher recruitment and retention. Five major factors and related policies influence teachers’ decisions to enter, stay in, or leave the teaching profession.[1] These factors are (a) competitive salaries and other compensation; (b) hiring and personnel management practice; (c) induction and support for new teachers; and (d) working conditions, including school leadership, professional collaboration and shared decision-making, accountability systems, and (e) resources for teaching and learning. CES incorporated these strategies along with feedback from CES employees and recommendations outlined in the DYS Safety Task Force Committee on staff retention strategies for DYS institutional settings.[2]

CES’s HR planning team grouped goals based on recurring themes. The plan addresses three areas that represent areas of HR operations and practice: (a) recruitment and hiring, (b) retention, and (c) employee engagement. CES identified a set of goals for each theme and outlined specific strategies. Each strategy and implementation is tailored to educators and professional staff based on promising practice and solutions identified by regional, state, and national partners and technical assistance providers.

CES also set a meta-goal, which represented its dedication to amplifying existing commitments for diversity, social justice, equity, and inclusion.  CES believes that diversity and inclusion can improve operations and enable staff to meet the needs of students served more effectively. In support of this, CES has engaged in a collaborative process to create a broad organizational approach to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion. Further, CES has committed to principles and practices of social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion and endeavors to become more committed, knowledgeable, and skilled in analyzing race equity and the intersectionality of oppression while placing these issues at the forefront of its strategic plan.

Please note that the national pandemic has impacted our work and will also require updating and revising the current strategies and timelines outlined in the DEI-RREP. The Human Resource Department looks forward to working with CES staff to adapt the plan accordingly.
